Can I Trust the Bible?

A large and seemingly old Bible

Yesterday, we talked about the important next steps for someone new to the Christian faith. One of those steps was that they should begin to read the Bible. Today we continue that theme of studying Scripture by attempting to tackle one very important question: can we trust the Bible?

In short, and in my non-scholarly vernacular, yes.

But don't take my word for it. The Bible contains sixty-six books, written over fifteen hundred years, by some forty authors and in three languages. That's a lot of room for error. Yet it is one cohesive story, filled with prophecy (much of which has been fulfilled), historical and scientific evidences, and life-changing truths. Archaeology supports it, and it has never been disproven or destroyed—and not for lack of trying.

If we as Christians are to read and study the Bible, then it makes sense that we trust it. You're not going to read or believe something that you don't trust to be real.

On top of that, why are there so many Bible translations today? Is there a reason we should, or shouldn't, read one over another? Doesn't that prove that the Bible is false? Tough questions, to be sure.

So, to hopefully help answer at least some potential doubts, I wanted to share four (sort of five) different resources today.

  1. Got Questions

I've shared many articles from Got Questions over the months. I find them a great resources in general, even if I don't always agree 100% . But for today, here is an article on why we can trust the Scriptures, and one on translations.

  1. Wes Huff

Wes Huff is a little newer on the radar for me, but from what I can tell, he is a reliable source when it comes to topics like Biblical reliability and textual criticism. Here is the first episode in a series he is doing on the trustworthiness of the Bible.

  1. Voddie Baucham

I'd encourage you to find the full sermon, but for now, here is a clip from Wretched radio (now Fortis). You can't deny Voddie has a way with explaining things! He is so missed.

  1. James White

When it comes to apologetics, I'm not sure you can top James White. He has defended the truth of the Bible not only against many false religions including Islam and Jehovah's Witnesses. He is a great resources for understanding how to interact with other religions, as well as the reliability of the Bible itself. Here is a clip (again from Wretched/Fortis) from a much longer video. I'm going to link to that longer one here, as well. It's long, but I encourage you to watch it if you have questions on the reliability of the Bible, as well as the issue of Bible translations.

Conclusion:

Keep in mind, there are many other excellent and reliable sources out there to help answer this important question. But, I hope that as you look over the ones I've shared here, you'll find that the Bible is trustworthy. Ultimately, it is trustworthy because God Himself is trustworthy.
