Allegorizing My Memories

A corner of a pool

For reasons I can't remember, I got thinking the other day about something that happened to me when I was much younger.

I didn't learn how to swim until I was already a teenager. I'm not sure why; I just never learned.

One day I was in a pool, and unbeknownst to me, there was a deep end. As I walked around inside the pool, I stepped on the decline that went to the deep end, and I couldn't fight my way back up. Soon I was under the water and losing oxygen. It was not a good scenario. Thankfully, my mom was around, and she jumped in and pulled me up. But it was a close call. And yes, I learned to swim not long after this event.

Why I was thinking about this while listening to a message at my church's youth group, I have no idea, but I started to allegorize it in my mind.

When I was in that pool, I didn't realize how much danger I was in, overconfident in myself, and I didn't even realize I had someone who would save me.

I suppose in a similar way, when people don't have a saving relationship with Christ, they underplay their sin, don't realize the danger they're in, and don't even acknowledge their need for a Savior, though that Savior is there.

Unbelievers walk through life thinking they're good enough, not realizing that they stand on the edge of eternity. And once you slip over that edge, there is no longer any salvation available, unlike me in the pool.

But for those willing to humble themselves, admit their sin, and admit their need of a Savior, salvation is free and abundant. Jesus will save all those who call on Him in faith.

So, why was I thinking all of this? I still can't recall, but maybe it's a reminder that you need to hear. If you're not a believer in Christ, call on Him today. If you are, then remember that we are called to bring His gospel to this lost and dying world.
