Worship God

People with their hands raised are silhouetted with light behind them.

Why do we worship so many things? It's really an offensive accusation, but if we're honest with ourselves, we all are guilty of worshipping things other than God on occasion.

When we find our worth in other things, when we find our hope in other things—when we search elsewhere for what we can only find in God, we are, in effect, worshipping that thing.

Jobs, relationships, hobbies, finances—you name it—all of these can become replacements.

But tomorrow, the Lord's day, we have an opportunity to remember Who it is we are to worship.

Hopefully you're in a church that proclaims the truth of God, His word, and His gospel. If you're not, I hope that you will seek one out.

Jesus, in John 4, talks about worshipping God in spirit and in truth. I think what He was driving at is that our worship comes from our hearts, and should be real, heartfelt, and based on the truth of God's word. It should not be about outward appearances, man-pleasing, or seeking attention.

The aforementioned idols, well, we don't have to inform our hearts how to elevate those areas of life above God. Our flesh does a good job of doing that on its own. Yet, we have to sometimes work to worship God.

But as we grow in our knowledge of Him and the love of Christ, it helps our hearts to desire to worship Him. more

So, our hearts need to be informed. We need to know and believe what God has said Himself. And we need to approach Him on His terms—not based on our so-called felt needs.

And so church is a place to worship, but also to grow in knowing Him more. In so doing, we worship Him more. Knowledge grows our affections and, in turn, our worship.

So, be in a gospel-centered, Bible-teaching church. A church under solid leadership that exemplifies (as best they can) the qualities laid out in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. A church full of godly examples who seek to live out their Christian lives in community.

Tomorrow, go to church and worship the one true God.
